Moving from identifying spoken words and parts of words to individual sounds in a word, is complex and requires explicit knowledge. It refers specifically to the ability to focus on and manipulate individual phonemes in spoken words (see diagram above). Phonemic awareness, which is a sub-set of phonological awareness, moves further along the continuum of complexity. These skills begin to build an early learner's capacity to hear and identify the spoken word and parts of words as separate units of meaning. The first three phonological awareness skills are words into syllables, rhyme awareness and production and alliteration.
